Dog safety at lakes and reservoirs

We love seeing you and your four-legged friends enjoying the scenic paths around our lakes and reservoirs.

The fresh air, open space and scenic views make them a perfect place to explore with your dog. But to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone - including your pet, wildlife, and other visitors - it’s important to always keep your dog on a lead.

Here’s why:

1. Unexpected dangers by the water’s edge

Even the most obedient dogs can get excited by a bird or squirrel and find themselves too close to the water. While a quick dip may seem harmless, our reservoirs are much riskier than they appear. Steep, slippery banks can be challenging for dogs to navigate, making it easy for them to slip in and difficult to get back out.

For their safety (and yours), it’s best to avoid the water entirely. Our lakes and reservoirs may look calm, but beneath the surface lies hidden machinery that helps operate the site. This equipment can create strong currents that are dangerous for dogs and people alike, with the risk of pulling them under.

2. The hidden risk of blue-green algae

In warmer months, blue-green algae can sometimes appear on the water’s surface. This algae might look harmless, but it can be toxic to animals if they ingest or come into contact with it.

Exposure to this algae can lead to serious health issues for your dog, so keeping them out of the water is essential.

3. Respecting wildlife and preserving nature

Our lakes and reservoirs are full of wildlife, including rare birds, wild plants, and protected areas.

In fact, Chew Valley, Blagdon Lake, and Cheddar Reservoir are designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), meaning they host rare species and fragile ecosystems.

• Cheddar Reservoir is home to over 200 grazing sheep, managed by local farmers Paul and Anna. Each year, we lose some of these sheep to dog attacks. By keeping your dog on a lead, you help protect these animals and support our conservation efforts.
• Blagdon Lake is recognised as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), and Chew Valley Lake is a Special Protection Area (SPA), boasting over 270 bird species. Many of these birds nest around our lakes, so keeping dogs on leads helps protect their habitats.

When dogs stay on leads, we can all enjoy these beautiful places while preserving them for generations to come.

4. Respecting other visitors

Not everyone is comfortable around dogs, and some may have allergies or a fear of dogs. When you keep your pet close, it helps everyone feel relaxed and able to enjoy their visit. Whether families with young children, elderly visitors, or those with different comfort levels around animals, we want to create a welcoming environment for all.

5. Keeping our sites clean and tidy

When dogs are on leads, you’re more likely to notice if they need a bathroom break, making it easier to clean up after them. Please help keep our paths and picnic spots clean for everyone to enjoy.
